The Community Outreach Programme aims to work with a wide range of community groups in carrying out environmental and sustainability projects in Hyndburn. The ultimate aim of the project is improve the environment and quality of life for people living in Hyndburn

Please click on the following links to read about the various aspects of our Community Outreach Programme.

Diversity

Historically, The Foundation has supported community groups with volunteers who are predominantly white and middle-aged, but this approach hasn’t given all walks of life the chance to help protect and enhance their local environment. Everybody should be given the opportunity to care for the world they live in, irrespective of ethnic origin, age, disability, religion or gender.
Through the Community Outreach Programme, we will work with people from black, minority & ethnic groups, people with physical and mental disabilities, younger people and older people. We aim to support those groups to develop ideas for new environmental projects and show them through the various stages involved in developing projects which not only improve the environment but enhance the quality of life for those involved.

Environmental Projects

The types of projects we would like to support and actively develop relate not only to the local environment but also to protecting the global environment. Example are;

Protecting local wildlife and enhancing wildlife habitats, e.g., tree planting, installing bird & bat boxes, enhancing river and waterway habitats, creating wildlife gardens and wildflower meadows.
Food & Health
Local food growing projects, community allotments, the Hyndburn Fairtrade campaign, local organics food co-op schemes.
Waste & Recycling
Community composting schemes, bicycle recycling, computer recycling etc.
Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency

Renewable energy projects, 'energy champions' in the community to reduce energy consumption, Hyndburn Carbon Footprint Challenge
Sustainable Transport
Car sharing schemes; walking school bus; footpath and cycleway improvements.
Local Economy
Developing social enterprises; ‘buy local’ and ‘grow local’ campaigns; LETS (Local Exchange and Trading) schemes; increase skills and employability through volunteering; environmental improvements which make the area more attractive; addressing derelict and underused land;

Volunteering

The Community Outreach Programme provides many opportunities for people to work as a volunteer on a range of projects. We have a programme of practical work days and training events which are open to anyone who wants to make a difference and work outdoors in the fresh air at the same time.

Working as a volunteer can not only improve the local environment but also your health and well-being. Whether carrying out tree-planting projects, working on a community allotment or a community garden, you can keep fit and healthy, meet new people and learn about Hyndburn’s surprisingly diverse natural world
