In early 2004 Lancashire Environmental Fund (LEF) awarded the Foundation a grant of £30,000 to support the Community Places Programme. This programme of local community-led environmental projects was developed though consultation work within the community appraisals and local Action Plans carried out as part of the Development Programme.
Spout House Woodland, Huncoat
This project was completed in 2006. Work included the digging of drainage channels, felling of 33 dead and diseased trees, erection of 500 metres of new fencing, planting of 3,000 trees, installation of 3 new footbridges, herbicide spraying and site strimming of the newly planted compartments.
Railway Cutting, Great Harwood
This project was completed during 2006 with the installation of 21 recycled plastic seats and picnic tables and the planting of 10,000 daffodil bulbs.
Tinker Brook Nature Trail, Oswaldtwistle
Through our partnership with the Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Primary Care Trust, Tinker Brook Tree Nursery has developed into a valuable community project for the benefit of people with learning disabilities and for the protection of the local natural environment.
During the year we supported the creation of a new nature trail around the existing pond, working alongside the Oswaldtwistle PROSPECTS Panel, Green Concern and Primary Care Trust staff. The majority of this work took place in July when over 40 members of staff from KPMG Accountants in Preston helped to carry out the work. This included creating a 30 metre stone path, a 30 metre boardwalk, a dipping platform at the pond and two new bridges. Further work on this nature trail will take place in 2006/07.
Huncoat Peace Garden
The aim of this project is to create a peaceful area in Huncoat where people can relax and enjoy the day with locals. This project is still under development.
