April  & MAY 2019

 

2nd April (Tuesday) 10:00am to 12 noon = GARDENING CLUB Accrington Women’s Centre Gardening Club is a small friendly group that meet for a chat and a brew and to have a go at growing their own food and plants for the home, a garden or on a windowsill.   Soil testing (bring a sample).  Free Seeds – sowing and planting potatoes, onions and carrots in pots and Part 1 of Plants for Problem Areas.  They meet on the first Tuesday of every month at the Lancashire Women’s Centre, 21-23 Blackburn Road, Accrington BB5 1LF.  For more information or a chat please contact Julie on 07799 295233 or email Julie.livesey@prospectsfoundation.org.uk Poster HERE soon

10th April (Wednesday) = Discover Rishton and the Canal - This amble not a ramble will start at  The Library, 27 High St, Rishton, Blackburn BB1 4JZ.  We will enjoy the canal, old railway line and local features at a leisurely pace to enable walkers to discover the area and with time for a chat and to relax.  The walk is on tracks, paths and the canal towpath.  People should meet at 0950 for a 10:00am start.  Some of the paths are suitable for prams and dogs are welcome on a lead.  Only one dog per walker though!  Please wear suitable clothing and footwear for the weather and the off pavement walk and bring along a drink of water.  For more information email barbara.sharples@prospectsfoundation.org.uk  details on the poster HERE. 

17th April (Wednesday) = TREE GUARDS IN THE JUBILEE WOODLAND with Baxenden Forum.  Meet at 1:30pm on the Cycle Track by the Baxenden Allotment and Garden Society cabin to the south of Hollins School, Hollins Lane, Accrington.  More information: Sheila McVan Phone: 01254 384619

23rd April (Tuesday) = Discover CHURCH KIRK and the Fairy Caves - Church Kirk Bridge 112, the half way-stage on the Leeds-Liverpool canal, Donkey Back picnic area, Hyndburn Greenway, Fairy Caves and other local features.  A circular walk taken at a leisurely pace  to enable walkers to discover the area and with time for a chat and to relax.  This amble not a ramble will meet at the Grade 2 listed building St James Church, St James Road, Accrington (off Church Street/Henry Street) at 09:50 for a 10:00am start.  The paths are suitable for prams and dogs are welcome on a lead.  Only one dog per walker though!  Please wear suitable clothing and footwear for the weather and a park walk and bring along a drink of water.  For more information email barbara.sharples@prospectsfoundation.org.uk  details on the poster HERE

24th April (Wednesday) = Basic Cycle Maintenance - FREE Basic Bike Maintenance covering: M Check; Identifying wear and tear on a bike; How to mend a puncture; Adjusting brake blocks / levers; Gear indexing; Cleaning and lubrication of bike parts; Time for questions.  Great course to help you gain confidence to make minor adjustments whilst out on your bike. You do not need to bring a bike or any tools as all equipment is provided.  This course is fully funded by Connecting East Lancashire / Lancashire County Council and available to adults living, working, studying or volunteering in East Lancashire Hyndburn Districy who are aged 16 and above.  Details of the the venue - directions and map will be sent out to you when you book.  Poster HERE.

29th April (Monday)  = ANNUAL LITTER PICK with Baxenden Forum. 1st May (Wednesday) 10:00am to 2:30pm = Volunteer Working Party - Towpath Taskforce Hyndburn.  Would you like to meet new people, enjoy some healthy exercise in the great outdoors and make a difference to your local canal? Our new Hyndburn Volunteer Work Party could just be the thing you are looking for.  Join the Canal & River Trust as we collaborate with PROSPECTS at 10.00am on Wednesday, 1st May as we launch a new Hyndburn volunteer work party. The launch will take place alongside the Leeds/Liverpool Canal at Rishton Bridge No 108A, Hermitage Street, Rishton opposite the Canal Café.  This Launch will be part of the first Hyndburn volunteer work party sessions and volunteers are needed. Monday and Tuesday (see the March 2019 Newsletter and What's On above) for details of volunteering opportunities in April dates are Monday 1st, 8th, 15th and 29th and Tuesday 2nd, 9th, 16th and 30th.
