1st May (Wednesday) 10:00am to 12 noon HYNDBURN VOLUNTEER WORKPARTY with PROSPECTS  & The Canal and River Trust.  Would you like to meet new people, enjoy some healthy exercise in the great outdoors and make a difference to your local canal?  Our new Hyndburn Volunteer Work Party could just be the thing you are looking for.  Join the Canal & River Trust as we collaborate with PROSPECTS as we launch a NEW Hyndburn volunteer work party. The launch will take place alongside the Leeds/Liverpool Canal at Rishton Bridge No 108A, Hermitage Street, Rishton opposite the Canal Café. This Launch will be part of the first Hyndburn volunteer work party sessions and volunteers are needed. 7th May (Tuesday) 10:00am to 12 noon Discover JackHouse, Oswaldtwistle - 

This amble not a ramble to celebrate ‘Walk in the Woods’ month will start at The Library, 289 Union Road, Oswadtwistle BB5 3HS.  We will visiting the River Tinker, Town Bent and a tour of historic Jackhouse Nature Reserve including the weirs and wetland with time for a chat and to relax.  The walk is on public footpaths and tracks and there are a few small stiles.  This walk is not suitable for prams or trampers.  People should meet at 0950 for a PROMPT 10:00am start.  Dogs are welcome on a lead.  Only one dog per walker though!  Please wear suitable clothing and footwear for the weather and this rural walk and bring along a drink of water.   The walks is for two hours and the distance will vary according to the speed of the walkers on the day. For more information email barbara.sharples@prospectsfoundation.org.uk  Contact mobile 07599 106670.  There is no parking at Jackhouse Nature Reserve – see details below

7th May (Tuesday) 10:00am to 12 noon = GARDENING CLUB Accrington Women’s Centre Gardening Club is a small friendly group that meet for a chat and a brew and to have a go at growing their own food and plants for the home, a garden or on a windowsill.   FREE SEEDS Sowing asnd growing cabbages and broccoli and how to compost and feed your soil for free.  They meet on the first Tuesday of every month at the Lancashire Women’s Centre, 21-23 Blackburn Road, Accrington BB5 1LF.  For more information or a chat please contact Julie on 07799 295233 or email Julie.livesey@prospectsfoundation.org.uk Poster HERE soon
 
22nd May (Wednesday)  10:00am to 12 noon = Discover Rothwell Heights, Bedlam, Green Haworth, and Hollins Wood to celebrate ‘Walk in the Woods’ month. A circular walk on hard track, road and public footpath through farmland. Not suitable for prams, trampers or wheel chairs.  Excellent views, some local history and we will also walk along part of the old railway line that runs through Woodnook Vale Local Nature Reserve (part of the national Cycle Network). This walk will be taken at a leisurely pace to enable walkers to discover the area and with time for a chat and to relax. This amble not a ramble will meet at King George V Playing Field, Royds Avenue, Accrington BB5 2LE at 09:50 for a 10:00am start. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead. 28th May (Tuesday) = BEGINNERS CYCLING LEVEL 1 - Get Cycling For those who want to learn to ride a bike or are returning to cycling after a period away. A Level 1 course is for those who are not very confident about their cycling abilities. The Level 1 course is delivered in a safe traffic free environment. Pick up the skills and knowledge you need to go down to the local park, or to take a trip out into the countryside. We are able to provide bicycles so not having a bike doesn’t have to be an obstacle! Please check for bike availability when you book. This course is fully funded by Connecting East Lancashire / Lancashire County Council and available to adults living, working, studying or volunteering in East Lancashire Hyndburn District who are aged 16 and above.

29th May (Wednesday) = CYCLING - GAINING CONFIDENCE LEVEL 2 – Improver’s Cycling For those who want to develop their confidence on a bike particularly in on-road scenarios. This session is aimed at giving people the opportunity to cycle on-road (Level 2 skills) in a relaxed and enjoyable group environment. If you wish to join the on-road Level 2 course you must either have completed Level 1 training or be confident you already have Level 1 skills. We do check this before going out on the roads! If you are unsure of your level, check the National Standards for Cycle Training syllabus at www.gov.uk/government/publications/national-standard-for-cycle-training. 31st May (Friday) 9:30 to 11:30 = KIDS LEVEL 1 CYCLING (RECAP AND FUN SESSION) – Bikeability Level 1. The Level 1 programme is the most basic stage of Bikeability. It takes place in a safe space such as a school playground or other enclosed area, usually in groups of up to 12 children. They're taught to control and master their bikes away from traffic. The venue is Oak Hill Park tennis court, Accrington.

31st May (Friday) 9:30 to 11:30 = Basic Cycle Maintenance - FREE Basic Bike Maintenance covering: M Check; Identifying wear and tear on a bike; How to mend a puncture; Adjusting brake blocks / levers; Gear indexing; Cleaning and lubrication of bike parts; Time for questions.  Great course to help you gain confidence to make minor adjustments whilst out on your bike. 31st May (Friday) 1:00 to 3:00 = FAMILY CYCLE RIDE - Gain confidence and learn skills to cycle as a family with this free family cycling session. A qualified instructor will lead the ride and teach you how to cycle with children using off- road, quiet routes and parks.
