Weekly Volunteer Activities 

PROSPECTS holds regular CONSERVATION VOLUNTEER activities at a number of sites around Hyndburn.  Please click on the sites below to find an activity near you.   Click on the What's On above for dates and times.

Monday and Tuesday (see theSeptember 2019 Newsletter and What's On above) for details of volunteering opportunities in September.  The dates are Monday 12nd, 16th, 23rd and 30th September and Tuesday 10th, 17th and 24th September
Sessions are 10:30 to 2:30 or as much as you can do!

SEPTEMBER Activities  

2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th September (Monday) 10:00am = PEDAL AWAY HYNDBURN - Beginner/ Back in the Saddle rides every Monday. For anyone needing to gain skills, learn gears, build confidence (& calf muscles!) and generally just wanting to have a fun ride. Starting at 10am from the cycle hub on Eagle Street, Accrington (opposite Tesco). We’ve got bikes, helmets, ride leaders and a big, warm welcome. If you’re thinking of coming along; just do it. Nick and Nancy will be there to help get you cycling. Bikes and helmets available or you can bring your own. Supported by The PROSPECTS Foundation and a grant from the Windfall Fund. £1 donation. Please phone Nancy on 07469148245
 
4th September (Wednesday) 10:00am to 2:00pm = HYNDBURN VOLUNTEER WORKPARTY with PROSPECTS & The Canal and River Trust. Would you like to meet new people, enjoy some healthy exercise in the great outdoors and make a difference to your local canal? Our new Hyndburn Volunteer Work Party could just be the thing you are looking for. Join PROSPECTS as we collaborate with the Canal & River Trust to improve the towpaths through Hyndburn. This workparty will take place alongside the Leeds/Liverpool Peel Bank Bridge 113A, Church BB5 4EF (near Emerson Renwick Ltd and Studio Arts canal entrance. Volunteers are needed. Tasks may include: Litter-clearance, towpath repairs, vegetation management, plus much more to improve the picnic area… Wear suitable clothing and footwear. 11th September (Wednesday) 10:00am to 12 noon approx = DISCOVER STANHILL VILLAGE HERITAGE TRAIL, Oswaldtwistle. - This amble not a ramble will be taken at a moderate pace .  A circular guided walk with a representative from Stanhill Heritage Project.  Learn about James Hargreaves, the Spinning Jenny, Robert ’Parsley’ Peel, a WW2 POW camp and Calico printing.  All on public access involving a mixture of hard pavement, footpath and bridleway.   This amble not a ramble will start at  the James Hargreaves Memorial Gardens, Stanhill Village, Oswaldtwistle BB5 4PZ (by the flag pole).  Grid Reference  SD728277.  Near the Stanhill Pub.

Meet 0950 for a prompt 1000am start.  Two hours approx. with a comfort break and a brew on route.   Park on the roads in and around the village please.  Dogs are welcome on a lead.  Only one dog per walker though!  Please wear suitable clothing and footwear for the weather and this rural walk and bring along a drink of water.   The walks is for approximately two hours and will vary according to the speed of the walkers on the day.  PART OF DISCOVER HYNDBURN walks.  If the weather is really bad there will be a talk and presentation in Stanhill Methodist Church instead...

18th September (Wednesday) 10:00am to 2:30pm = HYNDBURN VOLUNTEER WORKPARTY with PROSPECTS & The Canal and River Trust. This workparty will take place alongside the Leeds/Liverpool Bridge No 108A, near the canal Café, Rishton.  Volunteers are needed.  Tasks may include: planting spring flowering bulbs for pollinators, weeding, litter-clearance, towpath repairs, vegetation management, plus much more to improve the seating+ area…  Wear suitable clothing and footwear.  All tools, hi Vis and life-jackets will be provided.  Please bring a packed lunch for a picnic at 1:15pm approx.

20th September (Friday) 7:30pm = BAT WALK 

with Baxenden Community Forum.  Meet at 7:20pm for a 7:30 start at the Alma Inn, 386-388 Manchester Rd, Accrington BB5 2QG.  Wear warm suitable clothing and sturdy shoes/boots for the weather and an evening walk.  Bring a torch and your own bat detector but they have some PROSPECTS ones to lend you.  Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

24th September (Tuesday) 10:00am to 12noon approx. = DISCOVER GREAT HARWOOD NATURE WALK.  This walk will be taken at a leisurely pace to enable walkers to discover the area and with time for a chat and to relax. Learn about nature on this very popular local walk developed into a Nature Walk by Great Harwood Civic Society.   A pleasant circular walk, with great views of Pendle Hill and the surrounding countryside. This amble not a ramble, led by PROSPECTS, from Allsprings Lodge, corner of Church Lane and Allsprings Drive, Great Harwood BB6 7RN.  Grid Ref  SD736330 at 09:50 for a 10:00am start.  Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead. Only one dog per walker though! Please wear suitable clothing and footwear for the weather and a rural walk and bring along a drink of water.  The walks is for two hours and the distance will vary according to the speed of the walkers on the day.
