Weekly Volunteer Activities 

PROSPECTS holds regular CONSERVATION VOLUNTEER activities at a number of sites around Hyndburn.  Please click on the sites below to find an activity near you.   Click on the What's On above for dates and times.

Monday and Tuesday (see the August 2019 Newsletter and What's On above) for details of volunteering opportunities in August.  The dates are Monday 19th August and Tuesday 13th, 20th and 27th July.
Sessions are 10:30 to 2:30 or as much as you can do!

Activities  

2nd August (Friday) 1:00pm - 3:00pm = BIG Butterfly Count Walk led by Hyndburn Butterfly Project.  Come and see how many different types of butterfly we can find and which wildflowers and habitats they prefer.  Family freindly event.   FREE packet of butterfly mini meadow seeds for all attendees.  Meet at the entrance between Alder Grove and Birch Close on Enfield Road, Huncoat BB5 6TY.  BOOKING ESSENTIAL in case the organisers ned to reschedule due to bad weather.  Email info@hyndburnbutterflyproject.org.uk to book your place.
 
5th, 12th, 19th August but check the 26th August Bank Holiday! (Monday) 10:00am = PEDAL AWAY HYNDBURN - Beginner/ Back in the Saddle rides every Monday. For anyone needing to gain skills, learn gears, build confidence (& calf muscles!) and generally just wanting to have a fun ride. Starting at 10am from the cycle hub on Eagle Street, Accrington (opposite Tesco). We’ve got bikes, helmets, ride leaders and a big, warm welcome. If you’re thinking of coming along; just do it. Nick and Nancy will be there to help get you cycling. Bikes and helmets available or you can bring your own. 6th August (Tuesday) 10:00am to 12 noon = GARDENING CLUB – Accrington Women’s Centre Gardening Club is a small friendly group that meet for a chat and a brew and to have a go at growing their own food and plants for the home, a garden or on a windowsill. Willow weaving for the garden.   They meet on the first Tuesday of every month at the Lancashire Women’s Centre, 21-23 Blackburn Road, Accrington BB5 1LF. 7th August (Wednesday) 10:00am = STONE CLEANING with Baxenden Forum meeting at the carved stone at the bottom of Hill Street. 7th August (Wednesday) 10:00am to 2:00pm = HYNDBURN VOLUNTEER WORKPARTY with PROSPECTS & The Canal and River Trust. Would you like to meet new people, enjoy some healthy exercise in the great outdoors and make a difference to your local canal? Our new Hyndburn Volunteer Work Party could just be the thing you are looking for. Join PROSPECTS as we collaborate with the Canal & River Trust to improve the towpaths through Hyndburn. This workparty will take place alongside the Leeds/Liverpool Canal at Warwick Avenue, Clayton-le-Moors with Field Bottoms Community Group. Volunteers are needed. Tasks may include: Litter-clearance, towpath repairs, vegetation management, plus much more to improve the picnic area… Wear suitable clothing and footwear. 8th August (Thursday) 18:00 to 18:45 = NATURE MEDITATION WALK with Jeff.  Gentle walk through Woodnook Vale incorporating forest bathing, Qi Gong and standing meditation.  Meet at Royds Street entrance to Woodnook Vale, Accrington BB5 2LH. Please wear appropriate footwear and clothing for the weather conditions.  Water to drink if it is hot.  Under 18s MUST be accompanied by an appropriate adult. Contact Jeff on 07729 097230.  
 
13th August (Tuesday) 10:00am to 12 noon approx = DISCOVER FOXHILL BANK NATURE RESERVE, Oswaldtwistle. - This amble not a ramble will be taken at a slow pace around the reserve.  The meeting point will be confirmed soon.  People should meet at 0950 for a PROMPT 10:00am start. Dogs are welcome on a lead. Only one dog per walker though! Please wear suitable clothing and footwear for the weather and this rural walk and bring along a drink of water. The walks is for approximately two hours and the distance will vary according to the speed of the walkers on the day. PART OF DISCOVER HYNDBURN walks. 14th August  (Wednesday) 18:30 to 20:30 = RIVER WALK.  Join PROSPECTS and the Ribble Rivers Trust on an evening walk from Arden  Hall Gates, top of Plantation Road,  Accrington BB5 2DQ. Please note the  terrain is uneven and steep in parts.  Distance: 4-5miles.  We will look at the rivers and lodges on The Coppice and the work done by Ribble Rivers at Slate Pits Farm. 21st August (Wednesday) 10:00am to 2:30pm = HYNDBURN VOLUNTEER WORKPARTY with PROSPECTS & The Canal and River Trust. Tasks may include: Litter-clearance, towpath repairs, vegetation management, weeding plus much more…. Wear suitable clothing and footwear. All tools, hi Vis and life-jackets will be provided. 27th August (Tuesday) 1:30pm - 3:30pm = Family Workshop at GrOwING WILD.  Fancy getting out in the fresh air and helping at Growing Wild Community Allotment in Baxenden?  Activities to include Wildflower spotting, Harvesting fruit/veg, Weeding and Cutting back.  All welcome, please bring wellies/boots and waterproofs or sun hat!  Under age 16 accompanied by an adult please.  For more information or a chat please contact Julie on 07799 295233 or email Julie.livesey@prospectsfoundation.org.uk
 
28th August (Wednesday) 10:00am to 12noon approx. = DISCOVER DEAN CLOUGH, GREAT HARWOOD.  This walk will be taken at a leisurely pace to enable walkers to discover the area and with time for a chat and to relax. This amble not a ramble will meet at the lay-by Blackburn Old Road, Great Harwood (SD717324) near BB6 7UX at 09:50 for a 10:00am start.  Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead. Only one dog per walker though! Please wear suitable clothing and footwear for the weather and a rural walk and bring along a drink of water.  The walks is for two hours and the distance will vary according to the speed of the walkers on the day.
