The PROSPECTS Foundation has received £19,975 thanks to players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

The funding boost from Postcode Local Trust will enable PROSPECTS to create and enhance habitats for wildlife whilst providing natural resources to encourage organic practices on a range of community food growing sites.

Bees, ladybirds, butterflies, hedgehogs, frogs will be enticed to take up residence. Hedges, natural barriers and areas of organic feed [comfrey, nettles] as a natural ‘security’ fence will be placed in situ as and when
appropriate.

PROSPECTS will be working with many community groups, schools and the local authority, supporting them to develop food growing areas.

But, many sites lack wildlife habitats important for organic food growing.  There is also a demand for more education around organic food growing ideas, such as growing comfrey to create natural plant feed.

Working with community groups and schools we will run training and activity sessions on creating wildflower meadows, bug hotels, organic feed borders, hedgerows, fruit bushes and heritage orchards (e.g. Lancashire apples), bird boxes and feeders, habitat piles and bog gardens.

The Project Officer will organise the events and deliver some, but specialist events will be delivered by external trainers. Groups, schools and individuals will gain skills, in creating wildlife habitat areas and community growing areas will have more wildlife habitat areas which will not only improve the natural environment but also contribute to organic food growing.

The project will include habitat training and activity sessions:This will enable people to develop new skills and knowledge on wildlife habitat creation.  We will also offer AQA Unit Scheme Certificates to people taking part.

Habitats on community food growing sites will be improved. Through improved habitats, there will be more wildlife present on food growing sites. Through practical events people linked to community and school groups will have skills to develop and manage natural habitats. Through activities and creation of new habitats, there will be greater awareness of the importance of growing food naturally.

Postcode Local Trust exists to fund community groups and charitable organisations through a variety of grant giving programmes. To do so, the Trust relies solely on funding from the proceeds of tickets sales from People’s Postcode Lottery. When you sign up to play People’s Postcode Lottery, your postcode is your ticket. It costs £10 for 10 draws paid monthly in advance with prizes every day. A minimum of 27.5% goes directly to charities across Great Britain and internationally.
